Boston announces Mayor's Green Awards winners

Four Boston resident groups, 11 businesses and two sustainable food leaders were winners of the city’s fifth-annual “Mayor’s Green Awards.”

Each was recognized during a ceremony at the new, “green” Atlantic Wharf skyscraper on Friday for “doing their part to make Boston a greener, more sustainable, and livable city,” said a city release.

“I continue to be impressed by the commitment and creativity of the businesses and residents who are working to green our city,” Mayor Thomas M. Menino said in the announcement. “Each of these winners demonstrates every day how we can improve environmental quality while at the same time bringing growth and prosperity to our neighborhoods. Their examples prove that individual efforts can create real and lasting change in our environment.”

Castle Square Apartments (South End) to get green makeover

Castle Square Apartments

The Castle Square Apartments building was never a showcase. Built in the 1960s, the 500-unit low- and moderate-income apartment complex on Tremont Street offered its South End neighbors a bland brick-and-concrete exterior. Inside, the smells of cooking would spread among units.

But by the end of this year, the structure will sport a new, more appealing exterior, units will be sealed more effectively, and energy bills for residents will be lower — a lot lower.

Castle Square is undergoing a renovation designed to update the building’s aesthetics and achieve radical energy savings — a 72 percent drop from current consumption. Key to the project is a new “skin,’’ a 1-inch super-insulated shell that will be laid over the building’s dated facade.

Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day! Yes today is actually Earth Day. It’s hard to know exactly when it is because Earth Day seems to have turned into Earth Week. Which is just fine with us. In fact, we think there should be Earth Year…maybe that’s taking it too far. We might run out of events to go to. Speaking of Earth Day events, how about a recommendation? The Whole Scoop on Whole Foods in Dedham, MA - Part 2

Yesterday we wrote a little post about how awesome the food and products at Whole Foods at Legacy Place in Dedham, MA are. Well, today we want to tell you why the store itself is so awesome. This is the real reason behind this two part post. Whole Foods is a green market. Like really green. Whole Foods is taking amazing initiative with regards to being green. They are clearly an industry leader in their thinking and actions. You can read all about their green efforts on the “Green Action” section of their website. It’s really impressive. From seeking alternative energy sources to simply recycling their cardboard to even printing with soy ink, their efforts are not going unnoticed.

At the Whole Foods at Legacy Place, there are signs everywhere telling you what makes the market so green (check out the pictures in the gallery below). Here’s a small snapshot of what they’ve done in the construction and running of their market:

Added windows and 16 skylights to allow more natural light, reducing energy consumption

Checkout stands are made with Marmoleum

Painted the walls with 0% VOC paint

All the wood is FSC certified

The toilet partitions are made from recycled milk jugs (a personal favorite)

They offer and use green cleaning supplies

All the food containers are either recyclable, compostable or reusable

They’ve used products like Trikeenan tiles and Lumicor resin panels

The roof of the building houses an 80kW solar installation

Even the receipt/register tape is made from recycled material

And the list goes on and on and on

We were really excited to see all this effort put in to the construction of the market. Not only will you feel good from the food you buy there, but you can feel good about the environment that Whole Foods has created. Many of the products Whole Foods used in their construction process are available in consumer versions, and will be available via the bGreen showroom this Spring.
